50. Durham Cathedral Circular
Meeting Point: Palace Green, Durham, DH1 3EP
The unmissable and iconic Durham Cathedral stands tall as our start point for this walk. A UNESCO world heritage site, it is prominent as one of Europe’s finest Romanesque cathedrals.
Dropping down to the banks of the River Wear, we follow its meanderings round to Elvet, where we cross Elvet bridge, and then recross at Baths Bridge, following the riverside path out of the city and up around the beautiful gardens at Old Durham.
Making a loop back around Broom Hill, we follow the Old Beck back to the river, then head towards Houghall and pick up the Houghall Discovery Trail, after a loop of the beautiful Low Burnhall Woods. We continue along the opposite side of the river, which returns us to the Cathedral.
This is truly a stunning walk, showcasing Durham City at its best and the wonderful countryside in which it sits.
